Over the past year, The Other Day (BHAM), has established a reputation as a “fun and compelling” and “wonderfully eclectic” group welcomed heartily by many venues in the Magic City’s booming music scene. This includes venues like Daniel Day Gallery, Iron City Grill, The Boss Lounge, Buck Mulligans, The Syndicate, Workplay, Saturn, Moonlight on the Mountain, and Good People Brewing Co. Always up to champion a good cause, their festival circuit includes festivals such as the RAINN Benefit at Saturn, the AirWave Production Company’s Riverkeeper Benefit in support of Black Warrior, Coosa, and Cahaba rivers, and the Woodstock Alabama Music Festival benefitting the community’s Senior Center and Meals on Wheels Program.
Their sound is as unique as it is appealing, mixing elements of Bossa Nova and Samba with Memphis and Muscle Shoals-flavored R&B, Blues and even a bit of Disco–all of which serve to create an alluring nostalgia their listeners LOVE. The band has an impressive and eclectic catalogue of original and cover material ranging from Jazz and Bossa Nova classics to Guess Who, Bee Gees, Aretha, and Amy Winehouse.
In addition to having a gifted singer (Jennifer Skates, who also contributes flute and trumpet), The Other Day has a lineup of seasoned musicians whose sense of dynamics and chemistry are undeniable. Their creative songwriting team consists of Jennifer Skates and Bobby & Catt Shiflett.
In 2016, The Other Day released a self-produced debut CD, Night Flowers, featuring seven original songs which highlights their songwriting skills and exhibits their serious musicianship along with their playful side. Their Latin-inspired songs are well received and continue to find a win over a new and devoted audience wherever they’re heard. Most recently, the band spent some time with Les Nuby (Verbena and Vulture Whale) of Ol’ Elegante Studios cutting live demo tracks they’re considering for their upcoming second album.
The Other Day’s lineup features Jennifer Skates: vocals, flute, and trumpet, songwriter, lyricist | Bobby Shiflett: guitarist, vocals, songwriter, lyricist | Jeff Waites: bassist, vocals | Stephen Casteel: guitar | Randy Blythe: drums | Derek Nolin: keyboards, vocals | Catt Shiflett: lyricist, public relations and herder of cats.
